I’m having another one of those scatter brained days. The clichéd “blonde moment” where sentences are just sentences and nothing resembling a paragraph appears in front of me.
Weight and points
Weight. Another 0.8kg (1.8lb) gone. A little slow, which I was expecting 6 weeks into the year. That’s easily combated by upping the intensity on the bike rides a little. Go on, admit it. All of you thought I’d crawled into a corner to grow my mutton chops in private. Sorry to disappoint you. 16 points was another close call. The next paragraph will help to explain the semi-lapse.
It’s that time of year again. Blood-shot eyes and what’s on my shoes week at university. Lectures start next Monday for everyone and this week is the first week away from home for the 17 year olds. In the gaps between my other commitments I am playing big brother to some of the new students. Our university runs a mentoring program where experienced students show new students where the toilets and photocopier are hidden.
Last week and this week I am doing 2 “enabling” courses. Some universities call them bridging subjects, and I’m given to believe that in the USA the heartless administrators just slap you right in the face and call them deficiency classes. I view them, and talk about them, a little more politely because I am not there for a lack of knowledge as such. I am using these as a refresher because while nothing much has changed since 1984 in the fields of chemistry and cell metabolism (I can hear Mr Botched stampeding), my best guess is that I haven’t retained much of what I only paid cursory attention to in high school.
Apparently that was today. Oops.
No, not really. Although there was an oops. I didn’t bother to look at the calendar. I just went right ahead and planned everything for the 4th. Oops. But that was the only oops.
I got the most important part of a romantic evening perfect. Dump the kids at granny’s house nice and early. I tried for over a week to secure a beautician for a 2pm pedicure on that Saturday. In vain. However I did manage to chose a spouse friendly movie for 4:30pm. I’m sure The Producers was better on the stage but it was a winner anyway. And dinner on a starlight boardwalk overlooking the river was great. At a restaurant that thinks 5 scallops on steamed rice is a fair deal at $20. We escaped from there for about a weeks rent. After that, the walk along the beach was superb. It probably would have been better tonight with a full moon but beggars can’t be chosers. Then it was home to act like a married couple with 3 absent children, collapsing exhausted into bed for the longest most peaceful sleep since last time we deserted our offspring.
