There’s only one God?

I was reading a news article today about churches giving their congregations training on how to participate in a conversation about The Da Vinci Code and it got me to thinking about religion.

Before we get started, I’d like to pre-warn people.  This entry is not sponsored by any church, business or individual.  I have no ulterior motive for this entry and hold no undeclared affiliations.  What is written here is purely my interpretation of my world from my perspective.

I’m not going to spend any time talking about the movie because I haven’t seen it yet.  I’ve read the book but I’m not going to talk about that either, but for a different reason.   When I read the book, I bought it in the fiction section and I read it for entertainment, not for education or enlightenment or research.  Dan Brown has never put his work forward as anything more than fiction.  It is carefully researched and skilfully written which makes it seem feasible.  But it’s still fiction – that’s why the movie was made by Hollywood rather than The Discovery Channel.

And that’s the secret to writing good fiction – make it believable.  Look up fact in the dictionary; and in a definition taking fully half a column, there is no reference to believability.  Look up believability or believe in the dictionary; a similar sized definition never mentions the word fact.  I’m the first to admit the two are similar in some respects but they are not mutually inclusive.

Calling The Da Vinci Code blasphemous opens up a controversial dialogue.  It’s fiction, just like trashy romance novels that “promote” adultery.  While we’re preparing to have Dan Brown hung, drawn and quartered, let’s burn Barbara Cartland at the stake as well.

Enough.

What I’m going to talk about today was an internal conversation that was started by the recent attention given to the Da Vinci Code.

BIg Mike 101.

I get quoted out of context a lot.  Let’s have a look at me and my upbringing, so you know where this outburst has come from.  I was raised in a Christian society by a mother with strong Christian beliefs and moderate participation, and a father with mild Christian beliefs and little to no participation.  The school system of my youth exposed me to 1 hour each week of religious education, which was basically Sunday school on a weekday – purely Christian.  Not like today in Australian schools – religion wasn’t taught at all for over a decade and now that it is being re-introduced it is being taught as a subject, not a belief, and there is exposure given to several different systems of worship.

Out of those beginnings evolved an adult who is kind, friendly, tolerant, diligent, trusting, trustworthy, helpful, caring, smart and good looking (not so much of the latter).  In short, I am the pinnacle of a mothers hopes for her new born child.  And from that smoother than caramel persona emerged a person unable to think the worst of anyone.

In keeping with my no-one is bad personal philosophy I hereby offer my theory on the origins of world religion.

My theory.

My theory of how world religion came to be the way it is today isn’t a concrete thing.  I haven’t done any research to verify historical data.  But I know what I know.

I will offer you my theory as a series of observations and questions for you to ponder.  And from that, let’s just see if you come to the same conclusions that I do.

Glaring differences.  Glaring similarities.

The funny thing is that for all the huge differences (the very differences that are currently killing thousands in Iraq, Afghanistan and many other places) there are also many very deep-seated similarities.

The status of women within societies based on Islam is not too dissimilar to the plight of women in European society a few centuries back.

What is the difference between the divergence of Islam and Judaism 3 or 4 or 5 millennia ago and the divergence of Judaism and Christianity 2000 years ago?  Or Catholic and Protestant Christians several centuries ago?

If these are all distinctly individual religions with little commonality, isn’t it strange that Christmas, Chanukah and Ramadan all fall at roughly the same time of year.  I’d say that the dates are near enough to IDENTICAL considering our current calendar system was only developed a few hundred years ago and still isn’t in universal use around the world.

Islam outlaws any visual representation of their deity.  Judaism outlaws any direct reference to their deity.

Judaism and Christianity have the same history based in Old Testament times.  Judaism even has some sections of its holy books that would be very familiar to even casual Christians.  Christianity emerged from a further series of modern day writings of the experience of some very radical Jews.  These writings are now commonly referred to as the New Testament.

Chinese whispers.

Everyone’s heard the term.  Almost everyone has played the game.  Has anyone guessed where I’m going with this?

Is it at all possible that at some time in the distant past there was one religion that was carried to the corners of the earth by different tribes and then the historical equivalent of chinese whispers morphed this original into many different "flavours".

Slanted perspective.

Or maybe it isn’t chinese whispers, but rather different interpretations of the same series of events.  Similar to how BBC, CNN, NBC and FOX all see the same footage and all report different "angles".  Maybe Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam and all the other religions are just different versions of the same thing.

There you go.

One species, created by one God and separated by 70 centuries of cultural evolution.

The question remains…

One God!  or  One God?

I stand by the former.  My God is the one true God.  I know him through a Christian Bible.  But I have glimpsed him in a book of Mormon, a Talmud and a Koran.  None of which I have completely read cover to cover, including the Bible.  My world is based on this perspective and I hold out hope that my tolerance is available to the hearts of everyone.

I am fully prepared to laugh myself silly at the final judgement when all the extremists have to stand side by side with the pacifists to await their fate, or receive their reward, as the case may be.

It’s just a theory.

Nice post, Mike! Sounds like we have about the same outlook! (Are you sure we aren’t secretly brothers seperated at birth?)

  2. uncadan8 says:

Very interesting post, BIg Mike! Your interpretation and observations point out exactly what religion is — man’s interpretation of who God is and how we relate to Him. I am a Christian as well and it appears we share similar beliefs, although I have a feeling mine are more sharply defined. Part of that is my personality, part of that is my upbringing like you mentioned. My immediate family is and always has been of strong Christian belief since our personal decisons for salvation. We are Baptists of the most conservative stripe without going off the fundamental deep end (in our minds at least; I am sure some would consider us to be "religious kooks"). Any-hoo. Very interesting stuff. It is always fascinating to see into the minds and hearts of those we identify with along other interests.

  3. Unknown says:

Being an agnostic, I often wonder how people form thier opion or idea of God. I attend church regularly w/ the wife and kids, as the message of the Christian faith is very sound in leading a good life. Plus, I love my wife’s singing voice. I digress. The born-again sects seem to believe due to a revelation in thier lives, while the older, more long standing religions sustain thru ritual and tradition, some even fear.
    Thoughts?

  4. Tom Stormcrowe says:

That ultimately, a particular sect or church is nothing but a governing body of people which choose to believe in more or less the same way, and that’s the difference between religion and faith. Just my thoughts.

  5. Suzanne says:

I to am always amazed over the fact that EVERYONE spends thier time forgetting the Da Vinci Coce is just a novel. It was fun to read….and contains a bunch of theories that have floated around for years…but thats about it.

  6. Courtney says:

I have never agreed with anyone’s theory more.  For me, living my life and accepting everyone is most important.

Chinese whispers was always my favorite game as a kid.

  7. Laura says:

You just described my theoty of one creator, just different view points. It is because I see only one, i can respect other beliefs while still maintaining mine. Nice ranting…

P.S. You can’t strangle Barbara Cartland… She’s already dead… and where the hell did that refernce come from anyway? She was fluff writer, not even a good fluff writer. Your really scaring me if you have read any of her novells. I read her last when I was still in high school… Now if you want to strangle some one, lets take down Danielle Steele

  8. Steve says:

Interesting post, BIgMike.  It certainly gets the thought waves churning.  It seems like you’re sorta saying everybody’s right.  All the major religions have certain fundamental beliefs in common and that we should recognize or even emphasize this in a more enlightened, ecumenical way.  My own view is that nobody’s right.  On the face of it, that may seem like the complete opposite of your theory, but I’d argue that the difference is more subtle than that.  The key similarity is that we’re lumping the big groups in the same category.

I’ve always had trouble with any religion that says there’ll be a Judgment Day and retribution against the non-believers.  How unfair it would be if some poor farmer in China who’d barely heard of Christianity should be turned away from the pearly gates because he had not accepted the "right" personal savior.  I’ve heard some people argue that special dispensation may be given to young children or those whose cultures never gave them access to "the way, the truth, and the light", but that begs the question of when a candidate for Heaven does become accountable.  When you think about fairness, it becomes impossibly murky.

So, while I respect the influence of religion for making people lead more moral lives, I still think they’re all basically flawed in similar ways when they start proclaiming the highground as their own.

  9. Susan says:

I admire your "kinder, gentler" approach to religion, Mike.  The world would be a better place if more people shared your beliefs and the absence of dogma in the way that you state them.  I wish that I could share your faith, but I just can’t.  I’ve tried to be religious, but my mind always returns to thoughts about who created God and how implausible the notion of an afterlife is.  Things like that.

But if more religious people were like you, I might just come around.  Lovely post.

  10. cosmogrl says:

Ahhhh, you have ventured into new territory!  And done so with bravery and kindness!  Good on you, mate!  I am a member of a structured sect, however, I am somewhat liberal minded and about the most open of ‘my kind’ that you would ever meet.  Sometimes other members of my congregation find me weird because of it—but here’s the deal—I think you hit the nail on the head.  I think we all have to use our own discernability and decide for ourselves what works best for us.  I believe that there is truth in all sects out there and I don’t condemn anyone for what they do or do not believe.  I think that God loves us all the same and that no one is going to ‘hell’ because they didn’t follow one particular sect–that’s just absurd.  I agree with you that this novel is just that—a novel.  Too many people get their panties in a wad over religion.  Live and let live, I say.

    Wen 🙂

  11. Nanget says:

No way!!i disagree. The answer is Scientology. Just look at Tom Cruise he seems pretty stable.

Good post Mike but i would steer clear of the creationist, evolution, intelligent design argument. At a christian school that one really winds people up.

  12. BIg Mike In Oz says:

Tom – Stranger things have happened.

Dan – I think my faith is sharply defined to me.  It just doesn’t conform to any readily indentifiable pigeon hole.

Boz – Stephen Hawking, commonly referred to as the greatest living scientific mind, and frequently compared with Einstein, whose field of expertise is Physics, strongly believes in a God.  For someone who is so close to understanding the origin of the universe from a scientific perspective to still believe in a higher power is good enough for me.

Suzanne – true, it’s just a well written summary of a big bunch of heresay (as distinct from heresy).

Courtney – tolerance and acceptance… hooray.

Steve – I don’t think the final judgement is something to fear.  I suspect it will be about accepting, acknowledging and ascending.  All the different perspectives will be given validation and clarification, and I expect everyone to get in.

Clio – mine isn’t a religion – if that helps – and you’re welcome to come and play.

Wen – People who are deaf can still "feel" sound.  People who are colour blind can still see trees.  The final product may seem a little distorted but the origin and the destination are very similar.

Nanget – Tom is a prime example of someone I wouldn’t raise the subject around.

  13. uncadan8 says:

Yeah, I see what you are saying, Mike. I mean that my parameters or distinctives are more sharply defined. We gots lots o’ rules! Some of which are important, some of which are extraneous.

  14. ...And The Little Minion says:

In terms of The Da Vinci Code…
I shouldn’t believe everything that I read or have see on TV? Blasphemy! Someone made a movie, spent millions of dollars, and its not fact? Kidding…
I find the uproar silly. I drive by churches and see references to the movie on their boards outside. If there are elements of truth to the story, why do those elements need to be considered contrary to modern religion? We don’t know with certainty what happened a thousand, two thousand, three thousand years ago, etc. Does that mean we need to put up blinders to any theory that doesn’t encompass our current belief system? Can’t there be elements of truth found everywhere?

  15. Tom Stormcrowe says:

NMinion, fiction has to have elements of truth forit to be cohesive. There are always transplanted snippets of the writers life that he uses to create the scenario he is writing about. It’s said that the Author is the ultimate voyeur, because of this.

  16. Kelly says:

It may be time for me to step a little outside my comfort zone and address some religious issues. eek.

My upbringing was in the Catholic church and school until later grade
school years. In college, I went out on my own and joined a Christian
non-denominational church while my parents were ostensibly upset.
Later, mom left the church to practice Buddhism which she still
practices. Dad attends the Catholic church one week and a pentacostal
church the next. My own children were raised in my Christian church and
attended the private school there as well.

Currently, my church is doing that series and I refuse to go for one
reason only: I think for myself. I have read the Bible cover to cover
and looked over the Talmud, dated a Jewish guy for years and practiced
with him, and look into many different doctrines because I want to know as much as possible. But I will not allow anyone to hijack this movie and get in on the "action" for their own gain, church or no.

My first thought upon reading that book was, "Hmm. What a nice piece of fiction." To think it has anything at all to do changing the history of Christianity is absurd.

    What is Chinese whispers????

  17. BIg Mike In Oz says:

Michele – Sometimes Hollywood is closer to the truth than CNN, but it’s rare.  Here’s a further extrapolation of the whole conspiracy of "conspiracy theory" theories… maybe Jesus is in South America, hanging out with Elvis and Hitler.

Kelly – Chinese whispers is a game where a group of people pass a story through the group, whispering to keep it just between 2 people at a time (hence the name). Example, person 1 tells person 2, person 2 retells to person 3, etc. The last person tells the story out loud to the group to see how much it’s changed as it passed around.
It’s a game, but it’s also a good classroom tool to help teach younger grades how spreading rumours can get out of hand.
