Friday night was a good outing for me. This is my first state championships since the late ‘80s so I had high hopes; tempered with a double shot of realism.
Things aren’t going too bad. I came a reasonable 5th in the timetrial I’m sure I could name at least 8 guys who wish they came 5th. I was a mere eight tenths off a bronze and less than two seconds from the gold. Better than 5th though is 4th, which is what I qualified for the sprint – great news indeed with the final on Sunday afternoon (I’ll be sure to let you know). Sunday night will offer me a shot at the scratch race but I’m a realist and finishing on the lead lap is probably ambitious. We’ll see.
Today (the Saturday that expired about 40 minutes ago) was pursuiters day at the zoo. I went to the venue to shout and scream and generally make a nuisance of myself in a motivational way. It seemed to work. My four clubmates who raced today took away three medals between them including gold for a gent who, at sunrise today, had ridden precisely zero kilometres of track competition. He’s literally ridden less than 50km on a velodrome in his life. He rode a borrowed bike wearing a jersey with pockets and rode negative splits for the whole race.
Oh well, off to bed. In 12 hours I have to get in the car and head off into the wilds of track cycling and try to find myself a medal. Our club’s assured of 10 medals out of these titles but I’d like to make it a nice even 11.
